By Bill Vilona, Ice Flyers.com correspondent

PENSACOLA, FLA. – The joyous chants and celebratory claps reverberated through the walls and hallway, leading to the Ice Flyers dressing room.
You could feel the scene just by hearing it.

In what became one of their most complete games, the Ice Flyers solved the Evansville riddle, producing in a 3-1 victory Friday night against the defending champion Thunderbolts at the Pensacola Bay Center in Game 2 of their SPHL quarterfinal round playoff series.

The win was the Ice Flyers first playoff game victory in four years. It forced a deciding game on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Evansville, Indiana where the Ice Flyers will seek their first playoff series win since 2021 when they won their fourth SPHL President’s Cup championship.

“Satisfying to win, that’s for sure,” said Ice Flyers coach Jeremy Gates, whose team lost four regular-season games against the Thunderbolts and the playoff opener April 8 at the Ford Center in Evansville. “(Ice Flyers players) played hard and in the right way. It was good.

“To have our team play the way they did shows we can do it. We can play with anybody in this league. And the good news is that we get to play again on Sunday and try to prove that all over again.”

Both teams left Pensacola on Friday night for the 600-mile bus trip to Evansville. For the Ice Flyers, the all-night journey was their third trip to southwestern Indiana in nine days.

They finished the regular-season last weekend in Evansville, returned to Pensacola, traveled back to Evansville on Tuesday, then back again Friday night.
But Sunday presents a chance to make it all enjoyable. Neither team had practice availability on Saturday due to an event at the Ford Center. Gates preferred his team get right back on the bus for the long ride, as opposed to leaving Saturday morning.

“What happens is after these games, it’s really hard for hockey players to fall asleep,” Gates said. “So sleep on the bus…. we’ll get some breakfast, we’ll get there, rest and get to bed early. This time of year, we need the rest.”

The Ice Flyers breakthrough playoff win Friday was embraced by a crowd of 4,772, which by far was the largest crowd of the four SPHL quarterfinal games that night.
It adds to the Ice Flyers setting another attendance record – their third year in a row – after drawing 168,493 fans in 29 home games this season. Attracting large crowds for a playoff game is difficult, because of an uncertain schedule and little time to sell group outings or advance sales.

But Gates sensed the enthusiasm earlier Friday afternoon when he went out for lunch.

“I had people I never met before in my life, saying they were coming to the game,” Gates said. “They recognized me and that’s impressive. Everyone is just so supportive. It just shows the passion here and this community has something to cheer for and support.

“Our front office does a heckuva job promoting it and I just want us to do our part as a team in putting the right guys on the ice and win a hockey game.”

With the crowd chanting, “Let’s Go Flyers!” moments after the opening faceoff, the Ice Flyers produced the game’s first goal, less than five minutes into the game, when Tyler Burnie got a pass from Tyler German and rifled home a wrist shot from inside faceoff circle.

After Evansville tied the game in the second period, Ice Flyers defenseman and enforcer Laudon Poellinger scored on a wrist shot with 45 seconds left in the period. Earlier in the period, he engaged with Evansville’s Cameron MacPhee in a mid-ice fight after the two instantly left the penalty box for roughing.
Poellinger had a huge night. Two scraps, a goal, an assist and chosen as the game’s No. 1 star.

“He had a Gordie Howe hat trick” said Gates, referring to the legendary Detroit Red Wings’ Hall of Famer known for his scoring and brawling. “He had a goal, an assist and a fight.

“(Poellinger) was involved all over the ice. Heckuva game by him. But everybody played well. The level of experience we’re gathering from this is just one step at a time. We got three more periods to play (on Sunday) and we’ll see what happens.”

The Ice Flyers got a pivotal final goal Friday when Matt Allen perfectly timed the carom off the back boards from a teammates and sent the puck into the net before Evansville’s talented goaltender Kristian Stead had time to react. Those are the kind of bounces you need in a playoff game.

Evansville coach Jeff Bes pulled Stead with four minutes remaining, following a timeout, to give the Thunderbolts an extra attacker. But Ice Flyers goaltender Christian Propp won his fourth game in seven starts by finishing an outstanding performance between the pipes.

It included stopping Evansville on a wide open breakaway in the first period. Propp is playing with his fifth different team this season after joining the Ice Flyers in late March.

“He was focused from the start,” Gates said. “He provides the type of leadership that has experience. He has played in big games before.”

Evansville has an 18-8 home record with three overtime losses. Gates knows it figures to be another hard-checking, hard-grinding type of game on Sunday for the chance to reach the semifinals.

No matter what happens, the Ice Flyers were able to re-establish themselves this season in the league with an upper-tier finish in the standings and getting a playoff win.

“We are a learning group that is just kinda chugging away at it,” Gates said. “Sometimes being naïve to things is great. It’s step by step. I’m proud, but not satisfied.
“We work our butts off, everyone in this organization to just keep inching away at it. Maturing, being professional every single day.. and giving our guys the best opportunity.

“(Evansville) have a lot of experience over there. They won last year and have a lot of guys who have come back and know how to do those little things. But we are a better hockey team when we play the game the right way.”

The Ice Flyers’ first two sellouts came during popular $5 Nights earlier this year, followed by a historic third sellout on Military Appreciation Night on December 27. Tonight’s crowd underscores the team’s growing momentum and community connection.

“This city continues to show up in a big way,” said Ice Flyers Owner Greg Harris. “Seeing the Bay Center filled night after night, especially on special theme nights like this, speaks volumes about our fans, our community, and the excitement surrounding Ice Flyers hockey. We’re incredibly grateful for the support, and it’s an honor to represent and play in front of the Pensacola community.

Wiener Dog Race Night has quickly become one of the most anticipated promotions of the season, blending high-energy hockey with family-friendly entertainment that has resonated with fans of all ages.

“Our fans have truly embraced what we’ve been building each season,” said Director of Marketing and Operations Brenden Arney. This sellout shows that fans are coming for the full Ice Flyers experience, from the action on the ice to the atmosphere in the building. The energy has been electric all season and tonight will be no different.”

With multiple sellouts already recorded and strong attendance across the season, the Ice Flyers continue to solidify Pensacola as one of the most passionate hockey markets in the league.

PENSACOLA, FLA. – The team’s pregame, morning skate, had just ended on Dec. 27 when the Ice Flyers players learned the game that night at the Pensacola Bay Center could be a sellout.

Instantly, more fuel for the motivation tank.

Three weeks later that same experience awaits tonight when the Ice Flyers have a rematch against the Evansville Thunderbolts with a sellout crowd on Wiener Dog Race Night, sponsored by PenAir Credit Union. The final tickets were purchased early Saturday afternoon.

Tonight’s sellout makes four capacity crowds this season. There will be wiener dog races, featuring more than 150 pups, between both intermissions.

“This community in general, it’s such a wonderful thing how they support the Ice Flyers,” said Ice Flyers head coach Jeremy Gates following Friday night’s 3-2 overtime shootout loss against Evansville. “Having the players able to play in front of a sold out building means everything to them and it does provide energy for them.

“When we capitalize on that, this place is a hard place (for visiting teams) to play in.”

Tonight’s game is part of a weekend of three home games in three days – the only time this season it happens at the Bay Center. On Sunday, the Ice Flyers face the Macon Mayhem at 4:05 p.m. on Youth Jersey Day, sponsored by Gulf Winds Credit Union. The first 1,000 kids ages 12-under will receive a replica Ice Flyers home-white jersey that has always been popular giveaway item.

All of this is part of six games in nine days, after the Ice Flyers spent last weekend in Moline, Illinois playing the Quad City Storm in one of their longest road trips this season.

“As I told the guys, we’re in the meat grinder of the season right now.” Gates said. “There’s a lot of lessons to be learned. It is a maturing process we need to get to. One shift at a time. One day at a time.

“The regular season is a dress rehearsal for the playoffs and how we play throughout the course of the season. You are going to have ups and downs, you are going to have adversity. What we want to do is just stay even keel.”

Gates hopes part of that learning experience occurred Friday night. The Ice Flyers jumped to a 2-0 lead at the first intermission on goals by Tyler Burnie and Zach Jones. Both were finishes of textbook passes by Mike Moran and Tyrone Bronte to wide open players who buried shots into a wide open net.

But the Thunderbolts tied the game in the second period. A key moment occurred on a penalty kill when the Ice Flyers just missed a 2-man breakaway thwarted by Evansville goaltender Cody Karpinski and prevented a 3-1 lead. The second after an elbowing penalty expired on Moran, Evansville got a tying goal as he exited the penalty box.

The game remained tied through the third period and a tight defensive overtime period when the Ice Flyers got just one shot in the five minute span. Evansville then won the 5-player shootout.

“I thought (Evansville) played a mature game. They are a bigger team, they don’t move as fast as we do, but they stayed the course of the game and took what we gave them at times.

“It was a good hockey game overall,” Gates said. “Our guys’ efforts were there. It’s a maturing process throughout the course of the season. When there is adversity, you have to think, am I going to waste energy on things I can’t control? Or am I going to absorb it, move on and learn and get better.

“It stinks we didn’t get the extra point. We’ll take a point for now, but we’re in a maturing process right now and we’ll keep moving.”

The overtime loss spoiled a terrific goaltending performance by Billy Girard, who grew up in Boca Raton and was playing in just his fourth game for the Ice Flyers, his first in Pensacola. He stopped 33 of 35 shots.

“I thought Billy was our best player (Friday),” Gates said. “We had some moments and he was great. He made the saves he was supposed to make and the ones he let in, he had traffic in front of him on both of them.”

The point gained Friday pushed the Ice Flyers (18-8, 4 OT losses) into a second-place tie with the Huntsville Havoc in the SPHL standings. Both have 40 points. The Peoria Rivermen lead with 45 points and a 22-8 (1 OT loss) record.

After this weekend, the Ice Flyers will have just 10 home games left.

“Time really flies,” Gates said. “If we get a win (Saturday), that’s three points out of four and we certainly will take that. We’re looking for response here. And Sunday we go against Macon, a team we’re familiar with (this will be the fourth meeting) and go from there. It’s just day a time.

“We have been doing a lot of win-loss, win-loss and we are trying to finding some consistency in our game. It is just a maturing process.

“We have a lot of good young players, we have a lot of skill, we have a lot of speed and we have a lot of good people, but it’s just that growth process as a professional each and every day. It’s a grind and we’re in the middle of it.”

PENSACOLA, FLA. – Nine-year-old Dalton White had never held a hockey stick, put on a helmet or attended an Ice Flyers game. The young local boy, who is battling through an illness, got to experience all of that on December 6th through Covenant Care’s My Wish program.

The day served as a heartwarming reminder of how sports can create unforgettable memories and bring joy to those who need it most. For White, what started as a simple wish to experience hockey turned into an extraordinary day filled with surprises, smiles, and the warmth of the Ice Flyers family.

Putting all of the usual game day preparations aside, the Ice Flyers organization dedicated the entire morning to making sure White’s wish was nothing short of extraordinary. The second he entered the arena with his mother, Laura, he started the journey of being a high-profile player signing with the team.

The day began with White meeting Team Owner Greg Harris and receiving a warm welcome from the staff, who captured the special moments with photos and video. White then visited the office of Head Coach Gary Graham, and then signed his official contract, becoming the youngest Ice Flyer in team history.

“These special charity moments, especially when they involve kids, those are the ones closest to my heart,” Graham said. “You get a chance to really have a one-on-one impact with someone. Dalton really got the limelight on him, so it was incredible to see how he handled it.”

After signing his contract, he checked in with the team equipment manager, Jim Chesnut, to get his team-issued gear. Chesnut cut down his sticks to size for him to use before walking him into the locker room to meet his fellow teammates. The team welcomed him with open arms as they introduced themselves before showing him his stall where his very own Ice Flyers jersey with his last name and his number 17 was on display, as well as his own team helmet and gloves.

His day did not stop there. He was then escorted to the team’s media room where he took photos and videos for “marketing content” just like all new players do. White and his mother then got to visit the team’s merchandise stand to pick out some swag before heading to the team’s press conference room for his official signing interviews.

Joined by Paul Chestnutt from Fox 101.1 FM, Ice Flyers correspondent Bill Vilona, and recently retired WEAR 3 ABC Sports Director, Dan Shugart, White began his press conference by announcing he would keep his helmet on for the interviews.

White said he was introduced to hockey by watching Tampa Bay Lightning games with his uncle. That led him to decide to have his My Wish Day be one with a hockey team and the Ice Flyers happily stepped up to make his day special.

“I have been on skates before, but I’m not really good at it,” said White, sheepishly, as he smiled through the press conference. “Getting my own jersey (with his chosen number 17), a stick signed by the players and helmet… it’s cool. It’s fun.”

From receiving his own personalized jersey to being “signed” by Coach Graham, every moment was crafted to make Dalton feel special. The genuine enthusiasm from the players, staff, and especially Coach Graham, transformed what could have been a day in the hospital into a day of magic and wonder for this brave nine-year-old.

“This is exactly what My Wish is about—giving Dalton a day away from illness and pain,” said Aaron West, Vice President of the Covenant Care Foundation. “We couldn’t make wishes come true without donors and incredible partners like the Ice Flyers. They went above and beyond, creating an amazing experience and capturing moments that will become cherished memories for Dalton and his mom.”

Later that night, he performed the ceremonial puck drop and watched the Ice Flyers game against the Macon Mayhem – his first time seeing professional hockey up close in an arena setting – with his mother, along with other family members sitting right on the glass.

“When I was first contacted by Aaron and Angela at the Covenant Care Foundation regarding Dalton’s wish, I knew instantly that I wanted to get the entire organization involved and make his day with us like no other he’s had or we have had,” said Ice Flyers owner Greg Harris. “Being a part of days like these makes you take a moment to truly think, and if you’re in a position to do something for someone, you do it. This day with Dalton will hopefully last a lifetime for him, but the other side of it is that it will definitely last a lifetime for all of us a part of this day.”

As White and his family headed back to their hotel that evening, they carried with them memories that will last a lifetime. His journey from watching Tampa Bay Lightning games with his uncle to becoming an honorary Ice Flyer showcases the beautiful way sports can touch lives and create magical moments that transcend the game itself.

Violent and disruptive behavior at Ice Flyers’ games is intolerable and not permitted at games or within the Pensacola Bay Center.

The Ice Flyers do not condone any of the actions related to the incident that occurred in the stands last Friday during the game against the Knoxville Ice Bears. We will continue to work with the Pensacola Bay Center and local law enforcement to ensure that all Ice Flyers’ games remain a safe, fun, and family-friendly atmosphere for all of its fans.

The Ice Flyers are built on a commitment to our fans and families, and our community. We will not let the actions of a few individuals tarnish the experience for everyone else who comes to enjoy the game. Anyone who elects to engage in any form of violent or disruptive behavior will be promptly escorted off the premises and prohibited from attending any future Ice Flyers’ games and all other events held at the Pensacola Bay Center. This is a place for Ice Flyers’ fans to feel safe and to create positive, lasting memories with their family and friends.

I am appalled by what took place in the stands Friday night. The aforementioned actions do not align with the standards I, our organization and fans hold. If our standards do not align with yours, you are not welcome at our games. Do not come back. Do not buy a ticket. Stay home. Do anything else. I do not want you at our games. We don’t need you at our games.

I want to personally thank our loyal and true Ice Flyers fans who come to our games with pride and respect. Please know we are doubling down on our commitment to your safety and your experience. Should any issues ever arise, please contact a CSC security guard until the situation is addressed, or connect with our staff at the concierge table above Section 111, and they can help facilitate your requests.

Let’s keep Ice Flyers’ games a place of excitement, unity, and respect for all.

By Bill Vilona

IceFlyers.com Correspondent

The Ice Flyers took on their alter identity Saturday as the Pensacola Bushwackers, then continued a recent trend of being a different team.

All in a good way.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the four minutes into the second period, the Ice Flyers grinded out a 2-1 victory against the Fayetteville Marksmen for their first back-to-back home weekend wins since December 1 and 2 when beating Peoria twice.

“I think we’re all jelling,” said Pensacola goaltender Stephen Mundinger, who made 34 saves – many of them creating reaction from the Bay Center crowd of 5,202 on the second annual Pensacola Bushwackers night.

“With every winning team, you just have to get hot before the playoffs and I think that’s the direction we are going,” Mundinger said. “Guys are buying in, doing all the right plays. It’s a whole different feel in the (dressing) room in my opinion. We are going into games confident.

The win pushed the Ice Flyers (21-20, 3 OT losses) above .500 for the first time in a long while and with 45 points.

The players were attired in the Bushwacker uniforms that were so popular a year ago and that was part of a theme of other activities in the game.

FIRST PERIOD

The Ice Flyers delivered on their first power play chance. Joseph Widmar finished a perfect pass from Garrett Milan, who was fed the puck by Andy Willis. The classic “tick-tac-goal” was wristed by Widmar into the net with 13:34 remaining.

Mundinger made a big save midway through the period. The Ice Flyers finished with a 16-9 edge in shots.

SECOND PERIOD

Mitch Atkins gave the Ice Flyers a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the period on an assist from Ivan Bondarenko. He finished a shot from the slot area and the Ice Flyers were seemingly on their way.

But the game got tight. Fayetteville got their goal with 10:17 left in the period.

Taylor Egan then got the crowd going when squaring off in a fight against Fayetteville’s Ty Proffitt. Both players landed punches, but Egan won the fight with a flurry at the end that got Proffitt on the ice.

THIRD PERIOD

No scoring, but plenty of end of game drama.

Mundinger made of one of his biggest saves of the game with 8:09 left on a point-black shot by Fayetteville right in the slot area.

The Ice Flyers then got a power play opportunity with four minutes left when the Marksmen were called for too many men on the ice. They had a few shots, but nothing led to a goal.

With 1:15 left, the Marksmen pulled goaltender Ryan Kenny, who made 35 saves.

NOTABLES

Ice Flyers owner Greg Harris presented a $25,000 check to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida.

The Ice Flyers will continue online bidding for game worn Bushwacker jerseys until 7 p.m. on Sunday. Merchandise was sold at both locations.

The Ice Flyers team dentist, Dr. Ben White had a ceremonial puck drop before the game. His business, White Smiles General Dentistry was the game sponsor.

Actor “Boston Rob,” a Pensacola resident who has starred on Survivor and Amazing Race TV shows followed White with a ceremonial puck drop.

The team honored front office executive Brenden Arney, who worked his 100th game Saturday night.

QUOTABLES:

Ice Flyers Coach Gary Graham:

“It was good. We’re slowing trying to build some momentum. The captains had a good meeting this week to set up some long-term goals. We had 14 games left, now we have 12 games left and we’re kind of breaking it up in a couple seven game segments with some goals to achieve each game. I thought it was a great idea. They are really leading right now.

Guys are stepping up right now. I thought it was a playoff style game. Both goalies played really well. Both teams checked well and both teams clamped down defensively, reminiscent of more what a playoff game would look like.”

NEXT FACEOFF
