Each month, the Ice Flyers organization will raise awareness and funds for local non-profit charities on the Gulf Coast.

“Giving back to the community is an important part of our organization,” said Director of Marketing Brenden Arney. “With our new Charity of the Month Initiative, we’re able to utilize our games and social platforms to help bring further awareness to multiple organizations.”

The Ice Flyers will be partnering with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Pensacola all of October. The Making Strides movement raises lifesaving funds that support breast cancer patients, survivors, thrivers, and caregivers through every step of the journey.

Fans can show their support by purchasing Ice Flyers shirts that are inspired by breast cancer awareness through the Ice Flyers online store. They can also participate in contests at three home games in October, donate through the Making Strides website, or attend the Making Strides walk on October 29.

Arney added, “Organizations like Making Strides are making a positive impact in our community and we as an organization strive to impact our community as well by helping raise money and awareness for our charity partners.”

The team’s Pink In The Rink Night will offer multiple opportunities to learn about the local Making Strides chapter and help support their cause. The sale of each breast cancer shirt goes to benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Pensacola and will only be sold throughout the month of October.

Pensacola, FL. (June 28, 2022) – Summer’s official arrival also brings more insight on how the 14th Ice Flyers season will be hosted at the Pensacola Bay Center. With the 2022-23 Season inching closer, fans can now start setting their calendars for every Ice Flyers home game.

The Ice Flyers will host their Home Opener on Thursday, Oct. 20. followed by Pink in The Rink Night on Saturday, Oct. 22 to conclude the opening weekend festivities.

“Our schedule this season worked out to be able to do a Pink in the Rink Night once again,” said Ice Flyers Owner Greg Harris. “This season’s game will be on a grander scale, making it a night of breast cancer awareness, raising money for cancer research, along with special pink jerseys that the players will be wearing and that the fans can purchase.”

Some of the fan-favorite staples will be coming back to the Hangar with the Ice Flyers hosting three Military Appreciation Nights, two Small Dog Race Nights, a Mardi Gras Night, $5 Weekend, and a Veterans Appreciation Night that falls on Veterans Day this season.

The Ice Flyers are also welcoming a significant game date to their schedule, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“Our Veterans Appreciation Night game and our Martin Luther King Jr. Day game will be honoring people incredibly significant to our community and our country, both our veterans and Dr. King,” explained Harris. “We have hosted a Veterans Appreciation Night every season and we are excited to host for the first time an MLK Day game to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Theme Nights, game times, away game dates and opponents will be announced at a later date.

By Bill Vilona, Ice Flyers Correspondent

The easiest sales pitch Ice Flyers owner Greg Harris made was to fellow team owners in the Southern Professional Hockey League.

A return week on Pensacola Beach? Sure.

Business meetings while families enjoy the sand and surf? Absolutely.

Mixing decision-making, season planning, rules decisions, with fun activities? All in.

“This will be the longest league meetings we’ve ever had,” said Harris, chuckling, as the SPHL league meetings that began Monday will end today. “But it’s great. What we all wanted to do was get together on the beach again in Pensacola and have some great meetings, but also enjoy some down time.

“When you have a team like us in the league, and a place like Pensacola to come to, then why not? For me, it means a lot because it provides a great way that I can host our league owners, our league partners and families, put some heads in beds on the beach and contribute to the local economic impact.”

For a second consecutive year, the SPHL meetings are being held at the Holiday Inn Resort on the beach. The SPHL office, led by commissioner Doug Price, along with the 11 team owners, vendor partners and families are staying in one place. The itinerary included a jet ski outing and boat trip to Sand Island and the Fort McRee area.

Harris knows the setting provided respite amid challenging times. Founded in 2004, the SPHL has endured the past three years of challenges with the ongoing coronavirus. It now has a geographic footprint of 11 teams in eight different states, stretching from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes states.

The playoffs were cancelled in March 2020. In 2021, the northern half of the league did not play the season as the Ice Flyers won their fourth SPHL title.

The past season resembled more of a normal schedule, but also with Covid-19 issues affecting scheduling and rosters. The player pool last year was greatly limited by the unavailability of collegiate talent, forcing teams to scramble to fill rosters.

College players in Canada and the U.S. were provided an extra year of eligibility because of the previous season being cancelled and few players opted to leave for minor league teams. This year, the talent pool has greatly expanded.

“One year (2021), it was just survival, and we did,” Harris said. “Last year was like a step forward to normal. But when you look back at these past three years, we are just in a totally different world.”

Now, league owners are dealing with economic challenges heading into the 2022-23 season which begins in October. Gas prices have soared. Hotel costs, food costs, equipment costs have all gone up. The SPHL knows its fans may not have the same disposable income as recent years.

“We are in a totally different economy,” Harris said. “This is why it is so important for us to be focusing on the revenue and expense side of things as a league. Every business owner had to adapt in the last two years and break down their best practices and make adjustments to survive and progress forward.

“We all have changed our business practices to fit our market. I think the important thing is to focus on ways to cut costs without losing the impact.”

The Ice Flyers, who finished sixth in the regular-season standings, were eliminated April 16 by the Peoria Rivermen in a deciding quarterfinal round game. The Rivermen went on to defeat the Roanoke (Virginia) Rail Yard Dawgs to claim their first SPHL Presidents Cup title.

After an up-and-down season, Ice Flyers coach Rod Aldoff said he would utilize the next couple months to decide upon returning to coach the Ice Flyers this season.

Harris said Aldoff has a standing offer to stay on as long as he desires.

“Rod knows he has the green light whenever he wants,” Harris said. “He has done so many great things for our organization and really helped elevate our franchise to where it is now.

“Right now, he is set to come back, but it Is a long summer (for options). He knows he has a green light if he is able to find the right job at a higher level that suits him and his family.”

As the Ice Flyers enter their 14th season as a franchise and the league approaches its 20th anniversary, Harris said stability has been attained and the SPHL has succeeded while other minor league hockey entities have folded.

“We are very solid,” he said. “I still go back to some of the decisions we made as a board in 2020 during the Covid year and that really helped teams, I think we made some extremely smart decisions. We have seen the stability of our league.

“From the Ice Flyers perspective, things went very well last year. We were able to get community support, local government support and make some strong decisions to have us thrive through it.”

The post Ice Flyers Host SPHL Meetings On Pensacola Beach first appeared on Pensacola Ice Flyers.

By Bill Vilona
Ice Flyers Correspondent

The Ice Flyers have seen how a player’s interaction with a needy youth can impact a life.

“I received an email a couple years ago from a mother, two months after her son met one of the players at a Big Sisters Big Brothers event, telling me how he has not stopped talking about it,” said Ice Flyers owner Greg Harris.

It’s why Harris is grateful to serve the past four years on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida and provide a special night Saturday to bring awareness to the local non-profit organization, which has made a difference in countless lives within the Pensacola area.

The Ice Flyers will wear custom, decorative jerseys bearing the Big Brothers Big Sisters logo and colors in their 7 p.m. game Saturday against the Fayetteville Marksmen. It is part of a variety of fund-raising initiatives on Big Brothers Big Sisters Night at the Pensacola Bay Center.

The game Saturday is the middle of the Ice Flyers’ three-game homestand this weekend against Fayetteville. The teams will also play Friday night and Sunday afternoon at the Bay Center. The Ice Flyers (26-15, 6 OT losses) enter Friday’s game having won six consecutive games and nine of their last 11 games.

“Saturday is just really a big night to get the whole community involved and bring awareness to an organization that has grown dear to my heart,” Harris said. “What it stands for is to develop mentors for kids in Northwest Florida. I think the organization has an amazing mission to it.

“So, this will be a fun night, community initiative night. I look at this kind of event almost like why not do this? We have a great platform and I believe it is our responsibility to utilize that platform and give back in various ways.”

The Ice Flyers are donating $1 for every ticket sold to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. Proceeds from an online and post-game jersey auction are going to the organization.

The other fund-raising events will be the “Chuck-A-Puck” contest at the second intermission, in-game raffles from various sponsor prizes, and other fan-services raffles.

“The jerseys have the logos, the capital B for Big Brothers Big Sisters on the front logo,” Harris said. “The jerseys have the organization motto ‘Defender Of Potential’ on the back of the neck. We designed to the jerseys with that mission in mind.“We will also have replica jerseys for people to buy. We’ll have contests going on throughout the game and facts about Big Brothers Big Sisters to bring more awareness.”

Harris said the local chapter has hundreds of youths served by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. But there are also more than 100 kids on a wait list for a “Big” an adult mentor from the community willing to volunteer some time to make an impact.

“There is such a need,” Harris said. “And what we hope to make people aware of, it doesn’t require a whole lot of time to make a difference. Just a few minutes of conversation and connection can make a difference. We’ll have an information booth on the concourse to provide materials.

“We need people to sign up and go through the process and taking on a young boy or girl and making a difference. Everyone I talked to who has been involved as mentor is that you get to a point where you just grow to love (youths) like your own little brother or sister.”

The Ice Flyers have designed the night’s activities in a way to have the staff of Big Brothers Big Sisters and volunteers attending the game to simply enjoy the evening.

“So many of the fund-raising events that non-profit agencies like Big Brothers Big Sisters are involved with require the staff to do a lot of work,” Harris said. “We do all the design, we set up all the raffles, we staff mostly everything. We do everything so (organization) can just show up and have a great time.”

The event follows the Ice Flyers $5 ticket weekend March 11-12 which attracted more than 13,000 fans across the two games. The “Teddy Bear” toss for the first Ice Flyers goal in each game provided more than 2,500 toy stuffed animals to non-profit groups across Pensacola.

Recently, the Ice Flyers’ service-dog-in-training, Ranger, a black Labrador/Golden Retriever cross puppy, visited the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida agency on “Big Hang Out” where the pup instantly connected with everyone.

“Whatever we can do to be involved in this community, we are all for it,” Harris said. “I believe that is what having professional teams in the community can bring.”

The post Ice Flyers Extend Community Reach With BBBS Night first appeared on Pensacola Ice Flyers.

Ice Flyers Correspondent

Marcus Russell was watching the Tampa Bay Lightning repeat as Stanley Cup champions in July when image of another team’s title feat piqued his interest.

The television broadcast showed the Ice Flyers’ photo with the SPHL President’s Cup, while mentioning the connection between the two hockey teams in the same state.

“They put the (team) photo of the (SPHL President’s Cup) championship and I thought, ‘Oh that is cool.’ It kinda stayed fresh in my mind,” Russell said.

Fresh enough that a few months later, Russell loaded his car, drove to Pensacola from his home in Michigan and joined the Ice Flyers for his first professional season.

It has become a rewarding experience.

Russell, 25, whose collegiate career at Michigan Tech was affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, has impacted the Ice Flyers as the team’s leading scorer, dependable player and steady locker room presence.

He has played all 32 games, producing 10 goals, 22 assists and given the Ice Flyers versatility as penalty killer and power-play forward.

“He has a great attitude, great teammate,” said Ice Flyers coach Rod Aldoff. “He just needed an opportunity. In our league (SPHL), you only play with 10 forwards, so everyone gets a lot of ice time and he has taken advantage of it. He’s really grown as a player and as a pro. It’s nice to see.”

Russell had previously learned about Pensacola and its hockey team from former Ice Flyers player, defenseman Kyle Froese, who was part of last year’s championship season. The two friends grew up together in Traverse City, Michigan, located in the state’s northern Great Lakes region.

“I knew as a kid, growing up, that Florida had a special, kind of unique hockey community,” Russell said. “We would go on vacation to Tampa to visit our grandparents and we would go to the Tampa Bay Lightning games. I was kind of blown away by the number of hockey fans.

“Coming here, same thing, it has been great. I love it.”

Russell seeks to continue enjoyment this weekend when the Ice Flyers play back-to-back home games on Friday and Saturday against the Macon Mayhem at the Pensacola Bay Center.

Friday’s game is Canine Companions Night with Russell and his Ice Flyers teammates wearing custom-made jersey with the images of “Ranger,” the team’s service-dog-in-training on the jersey. Those player jerseys will be auctioned after the game and online purchase of replica jerseys continue through Feb. 7.

On Saturday, the pup theme continues with Weiner Dog Race Night.

The last time the Ice Flyers faced Macon, they set an SPHL record for most single-game goals by a team with their 13-4 win Jan. 22 at the Bay Center. This weekend’s games follow a pair of hard-luck, one-goal road losses against the Fayetteville Marksmen.

The second loss on Sunday was a 6-5 setback in overtime, after the Ice Flyers tied the game with 49 seconds remaining in regulation play.

With the season past its halfway point, Russell has already played more games for the Ice Flyers than he did during his entire career (24 games) at Michigan Tech. The team’s season a year ago was cancelled by COVID, along with the entire levels of collegiate hockey.

“The last couple of years have obviously been a little rocky for hockey players,” Russell said. “So, it’s been kind of an adjustment just to get playing again, playing a lot of games.

“It’s a pretty physical league so I needed to make that adjustment. Those are the things I had to adapt to from the start. It’s definitely an adjustment. Playing all these games is definitely a lot of fun and I’m really enjoying it, so it’s a good adjustment.”

Russell has benefitted from being part of an accomplished hockey family. His father, Jon Russell, played for Michigan State and two seasons of minor league pro hockey after being drafted by the NHL’s former Hartford Whalers.

A young brother plays at Brown University in the well-regarded Ivy League hockey conference. Another young brother has committed to play at Michigan State.

When the three brothers were kids, Jon Russell built a hockey rink in the family backyard. The memories remain special of the family games on that rink.

“A lot of days out there with the cold toes and coming in for some warm soup for lunch,” said Marcus Russell, laughing. “We had boards and the whole thing. And it was a lot of fun.

“It is pretty wild and pretty unique for all of us to get to that level and take those steps. When we get together in the summer, we still compete. So that continues from when we were playing on the backyard rink.”

At Michigan Tech, playing time was limited for Russell. But he thrived in the classroom where he earned numerous academic awards within the conference and team standards. He was a high performing student with aspirations now of going into the medical field when hockey is done.

“I think my confidence through playing a little more this year as grown,” he said. “I think throughout the season I have definitely been building more confidence, making more plays and trying to shoot the puck more.”

He is the kind of player that Aldoff seeks for a pro opportunity, knowing the desire and effort will be consistent.

“I did some background on his junior days and I knew he had some talent,” Aldoff said. “Like a lot of guys playing in college, they just need an opportunity. A lot of guys in college, there are going to be 28 players on the team and sometimes you get buried in the pile.

“What he’s done here is come in and make the most of an opportunity which is great to see.”

The post After Learning Of Ice Flyers Success In Stanley Cup Broadcast, Russell Shining For Team In Rookie Season first appeared on Pensacola Ice Flyers.

Pensacola, Fla. (Jan. 13, 2022) – The Pensacola Ice Flyers announced today they and their hospital provider, West Florida Hospital, have joined with the University of Central Florida College of Medicine to add coverage of the team as part of the rotation for medical residents.

The residents are a part of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Residency Program at West Florida Hospital (WFH) and will begin the rotation at the Ice Flyers home game this Friday night and continue through the remainder of the season.

“The UCF/WFH PMR residents are excited to partner with the Pensacola Ice Flyers,” stated Program Director, Dr. Susan Belcher. “Under the supervision of WFH team physicians, the doctors will learn cutting edge techniques in sports medicine.”

“This is a great opportunity for the residents to work with professional athletes,” Associate Program Director, Dr. Christopher Burton, commented. “The types of injuries a high-level athlete will sustain during competition are much different than what the residents typically see in clinic from a weekend warrior like myself. Likewise, the treatment options and return to activity protocols can vary quite a bit from how we handle the degenerative changes seen in our active older population.”

Dr. Donald Dewey, Chief of Staff at West Florida Hospital, and an orthopedic surgeon of the Musculoskeletal Center, has been the lead team physician and corporate partner of the Ice Flyers since they began in 2009, and was a key factor in helping connect UCF, West Florida Hospital and the Ice Flyers in the new partnership.

“Comprehensive medical care to our Ice Flyers players and staff is of paramount importance for this professional hockey team in Pensacola,” Dewey stated. “We strive to achieve perfection towards this end and the addition of these excellent physicians from the graduate medical education program from West Florida Hospital and UCF is a very big shot in the arm.”

“Dr. Dewey has been a tremendous asset and supporter of the Ice Flyers throughout the years,” Ice Flyers owner Greg Harris said. “He has created a team of amazing doctors to cover us, and now by helping add medical residents to the team, it gives me even greater assurance that every Ice Flyer will always receive the best medical coverage.”

The residency program began in 2020 with WFH and UCF initially having PMR and Gynecology residencies. They have developed plans to add ER, Internal Medicine and Surgery next year. Each resident is evaluated after medical school graduation and must meet stringent requirements for admission to the residency program. Hundreds of candidates apply for only three to six available positions per year.

“I am extremely grateful to Dr. Dewey and his team, Dr. Jeff Buchalter, as well as the UCF College of Medicine and West Florida Hospital for coming together and approaching us with this partnership,” Harris added. “It is definitely special to be a part of a medical residency training program, and I am excited we can help bring some top doctors to our community from which everyone can benefit.”

“We welcome the physicians with open arms to serve as a vital link between the medical community, the sports community and our number one fans,” Dewey commented. “We look forward to and welcome the admission and inclusion of great medical education program for physical medicine and education and rehabilitation positions with the Ice Flyers.”

WFH and UCF anticipate a long-lasting relationship through the expanding volume of residencies that will add many doctors who are highly trained in specialties into the medical community of Pensacola. The partnership is extremely fitting as they mesh the medical sports and fan-based communities.

Burton stated, “Most Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residents are very active and enjoy sports, so adding coverage of the Ice Flyers to our training program is a great way to attract the best young doctors to Pensacola. They are a tremendous benefit to our entire community.”

Belcher finished off by saying, “We are so excited for this opportunity with the Ice Flyers. The Residents are looking forward to being part of the championship tradition of the organization and stitching up a few cuts along the way. The partnership will enable Pensacola to become a top training spot for the next generation of physicians.”

The post Ice Flyers Announce UCF Medical Residents to Team Coverage first appeared on Pensacola Ice Flyers.

Pensacola, Fla. (Jan. 5, 2022) – The Pensacola Ice Flyers announced today they have a new addition to the organization by way of a puppy that is a future service dog through the national non-profit organization called Canine Companions.

The puppy is named Ranger and is a black Labrador/Golden Retriever cross. He arrived in Pensacola a week before Christmas and will be raised and socialized by long-time volunteer puppy raisers, LeAnne Pickering and Weston Cramer. Ranger was already named when they were informed they would be receiving a new puppy to raise. It was a perfect name as Cramer is an Army Ranger who served from 2003 to 2008 with the 3rd Infantry Division and was deployed in 2005 for Operation Iraqi Freedom III with his operation being East Baghdad.

“I’ve known Weston for a while now and have recently got to know LeAnne, and I was fortunate enough to get to know their previous puppy,” said Ice Flyers owner Greg Harris. “We had talked multiple times about the Ice Flyers having a puppy as part of the team and everything fell into place in late December. Although we did not get to name the puppy, I feel the name Ranger is perfect as he now is also a tribute to Weston and his service and sacrifice for the country. A Ranger helping raise Ranger to become a service dog for someone in need.”

The concept of service dogs for people with physical disabilities began with Canine Companions in the mid-70’s in a home office and a garage. In the 47 years since, thanks to the unparalleled generosity and dedication from supporters, they have grown tremendously and are the leader in the service dog industry.

“I have been involved with Canine Companions since 2004, and Ranger will be the 12th puppy I have raised for this amazing organization,” Pickering stated. “The fact that Canine Companions has been around since 1975 and has placed over 7,000 dogs free of charge is just one of the many reasons I keep coming back.”

“As a volunteer puppy raiser, it is a rewarding experience with selfless service to raise a Canine Companions service dog that can help adults, children, and veterans with disabilities,” Cramer commented. “The partnership with the Ice Flyers will bring a greater awareness of Canine Companions as a non-profit organization to the Pensacola area and surrounding communities.”

For the next 14-18 months, Ranger will be in Pensacola and taking part in different community events, activities and games with the Ice Flyers. After that, Ranger will move on to professional training where he will learn more advanced commands in order to become an expertly trained service dog.

“I’m excited to add a dog to our team and having Ranger represent the Ice Flyers as we promote and draw attention to Canine Companions and the need for service dogs,” Harris added. “I know our fans and community will love having an Ice Flyers puppy and will look forward to having him as a member of the Ice Flyers family. I also want to thank LeAnne and Weston for their work and commitment to this partnership and becoming a part of our family, too.”

Cramer followed up by stating, “A Canine Companions future service dog can make a positive difference in someone’s life. It’s all about making miracles happen with Canine Companions.”

“I can’t imagine not having a puppy,” Pickering said. “When people ask me, ‘How can you give them up?’, I say, ‘How can I not?’. These dogs go on to help veterans, children and adults with disabilities. I will never forget handing over the leash of my first dog to her forever person. It was life changing.”
